On February 4, 2009, President Obama signed into law the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009, also known as CHIPRA.
The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was originally created in 1997 as a state and federal program to provide affordable health insurance for children in families whose earnings are too high to be eligible for Medicaid but cannot afford to purchase private health coverage on their own. The updates in CHIPRA extend additional rights and premium subsidies under employer group coverage.
Employers must notify employees of their rights under CHIPRA annually, in writing. Below are links to English and Spanish versions of the notice.
As an employer with a qualified health plan, you are required by CHIPRA to provide this notice to each employee no later than May 1, 2010.
